The name is composed of two elements: from the Gaulish “ver(n)” meaning “alder tree, flourishing, full of life” plus “-o / -onis (local suffix),” meaning “place of alder trees.” In turn, the name means “place of the alders.” Vernon’s earliest known use as a surname dates from the early 1030s, when a Hugh de Vernon was recorded as one of the men consenting to a grant of land by Duke Robert of Normandy to the abbey of St Wandrille at Serville, ten miles north of Rouen.
