This name derives from the Hebrew name “Yehôsêph”, meaning “Yehowah has added, he will enlarge, God will increase, may he add”, which in turn derives from “yâsaph”, meaning “to add, increase, do again, increase, do again”. The name has enjoyed significant popularity in its many forms in numerous countries, and is especially common in contemporary Israel, as either "Yossi" or "Yosef". In the Old Testament, Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and Rachel's first. In the New Testament, Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
