Đurađ, Đurđe
OTHER SCRIPTS:
Serbian (Ђура)
LANGUAGE FAMILY:
indo-european > hellenic > greek
ORIGIN:
greek
NAME ROOT:
Gê éRGON > GEōRGóS > GEōRGIOS
NATIVE NAME ROOT:
Gê (γῆ) éRGON ‎(ἔργον) GEōRGóS ‎(γεωργός) GEōRGIOS (Γεώργιος)
MEANING:
This name derives from the Ancient Greek name “Geṓrgios ‎(Γεώργιος)”, from the element: “geōrgós ‎(γεωργός)” (tilling the ground, fertilizing), which in turn derives from “gê (γῆ)” (land, earth, country, soil) plus “érgon ‎(ἔργον)” (deed, doing, action, labour, work, task). In turn, the name means “land-worker, farmer”. In the West, the name is known from the eleventh century as a result of the Crusades. The name’s use was extended due to the popularity of St. George and the Golden Legend, widespread in the European courts of the thirteenth century. In Germany the name has been popular since the Middle Ages, declining in later use. In Britain, despite there being St. George, the patron of England since the fourteenth century, the name did not become popular until the eighteenth century following the accession of George I of England. In the United States, statistics from mid-nineteenth century placed him among the five most popular baby names.

Color meaning:

Black is the color of the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, creating an air of mystery. It keeps things bottled up inside, hidden from the world. In color psychology the meaning of the color black is protection from external emotional stress. It creates a barrier between itself and the outside world, providing comfort while protecting its emotions and feelings, and hiding its vulnerabilities, insecurities and lack of self-confidence. In times of fear and uncertainty black contains the energy of the threatening unknown. In a positive state, black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge and disappear once again. It is also mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility.
