LANGUAGE FAMILY:

ORIGIN:
germanic
NAME ROOT:
*HAIMAZ *RīKIJAZ > HAIMIRICH
MEANING:
This name derives from the Old High German name “Haimirich”, composed of two elements “*haimaz” (home, house) plus “*rīkijaz” (kingly, royal, noble, mighty, distinguished, powerful, rich). The name means “ruler of the home, sovereign of the homeland”. Harry, its English short form, was considered the "spoken form" of Henry in medieval England. Most English kings named Henry were called Harry. At one time the name was so popular for English men that the phrase "Tom, Dick, and Harry" was used to refer to everyone. Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512) was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Afro-Eurasians.
