This name derives from the Old High German “Ermenfrid,” composed of two elements: “*ermunaz” (strong, whole, tall, exalted, great, powerful) plus “*friþuz” (peace, tranquility, friendship). In turn, the name means “one who maintains the universal peace.” 1) Ermenfried van Amiens is the first known count of Amiens. He was the father of Hildegarde, who married Rudolf of Laon and would succeed him. 2) St. Ermenfred and his brother Valdeleno, sons of Ermenrico and Valdalena, were born in the village of the Sequani, in the region of Clerval-sur-le-Doubs, towards the end of the 6th-century, and were raised at the court of Clotarius II, king of Neustria. When their father died, they inherited a monastery built in 617 by their relative Randonna. 3) Hermenfrido († ~670) was a refounder and abbot of the Burgundian monastery of Cusance. His cult as a saint was confirmed by Pope Leo XIII in 1902.
