This name derives from the Old High German “Engelberga,” composed of two elements: “*anguz” (narrow, tight) plus “*berganą / *burgz” (to take care, to preserve, to protect, to save, to help, to rescue / fortification, stronghold, fortified city, castle). 1) Engelberga was the wife of Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor, and remained the Holy Roman Empress to his death on 12 August 875. As empress, she exerted a powerful influence over her husband. She was probably the daughter of Adelchis I of Parma and a member of one of the most powerful families in the Kingdom of Italy at that time, the Supponids. 2) Engelberg is a resort town and municipality in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. Besides Engelberg’s village, the municipality also includes the settlements of Grafenort, Obermatt, and Schwand.
