A theory includes from the Ancient Greek “eleúthō (ἐλεύθω),” meaning “the bringer.” Eileithyia was the Greek goddess of childbirth and midwifery. In the cave of Amnisos (Crete), she was related to the annual birth of the divine child, and her cult is connected with “Enesidaon” (the earth shaker), who was the chthonic aspect of the god Poseidon. Her worship may be related to the cult of Eleusis.
