The name means “the cave of the faithful”. La Virgen de Covadonga, known as La Santina, is an image of the Virgin Mary found in a cave in Covadonga, in northwestern Spain. She is the patron saint of Asturias and one of the seven patron saints of Spain’s autonomous communities. The cave is visited, and the Pilgrims lit many candles. The Battle of Covadonga was the first significant victory by a Christian military force in Iberia following the Muslim Moors’ conquest of that region in 711.
