This name derives from the Latin root “claudus > Claudĭus,” meaning (lame, crippled, disabled) Claudius “Latin: Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus,” was Roman emperor from 41 to 54. A member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, he was the son of Drusus and Antonia Minor. The Gens Claudia, sometimes written Clodia, was one of the most prominent patrician houses in Rome. The Gens traced its origin to the earliest days of the Roman Republic.
