The origin of this name is still today quite uncertain. The theories include: From the Ancient Greek “Abérkios (Αβέρκιος) Áouírkios (Άουίρκιος),” probably meaning “Phrygian.” Abercius of Hierapolis († 167) was a bishop of Hierapolis (modern Castabala) at the time of Marcus Aurelius, also known as Abercius Marcellus. He was supposedly the successor to Papias. It is known that he evangelized Syria and Mesopotamia and is referred to as one of the Equals-to-the-Apostles. He was imprisoned under Marcus Aurelius and died around 167.
