Asphyxía

This name derives from the Ancient Greek “asphuxíā (ᾰ̓σφῠξῐ́ᾱ),” meaning “stopping of the pulse,” composed of two elements: “a- (ἀ-)” (not, without) plus “sphúxis (σφῠ́ξῐς)” (pulse, heartbeat). In turn, the name means “one who has no fear.” 1) Asphyxia or asphyxiation is a condition of the severely deficient oxygen supply to the body that arises from abnormal breathing. An example of asphyxia is choking. Asphyxia causes generalized hypoxia, which primarily affects the tissues and organs. 2) Mount Asphyxia is a prominent volcanic cone reaching 550 meters (1,800 ft), forming Zavodovski Island’s summit, northernmost of the South Sandwich Islands.
