antí gen- ‎/ génos > Antigóne
Meaning:*
This name derives from the Ancient Greek “Antigóne (Ἀντιγόνη),” composed of two elements: “antí (ἀντί)” (over against, opposite) plus “gen- ‎(γεν-) génos ‎(γένος)” (to be born, offspring, descendant, family, race, gender). In turn, the name means “opposed to motherhood, in place of a mother, against men.” Antigone is a daughter of the accidentally incestuous marriage between King Oedipus of Thebes and his mother, Jocasta.
