Angústies

This name derives from the Marian title “Nuestra Señora de las Angustias,” from the Latin “angustiae,” meaning “breathlessness, tribulation, pain, anxiety, anguish.” Nuestra Señora de las Angustias (Our Lady of Sorrows), the Sorrowful Mother or Mother of Sorrows (Latin: Mater Dolorosa), and Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, or Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are names by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life. As Mater Dolorosa, it is also an essential subject for Marian art in the Catholic Church. Angústias is one of the three civil parishes that comprise the urban area of the city of Horta, on the island of Faial in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.
