This name derives from the Anglo-Saxon name “Æðelric,” composed of two Old High German and Ancient Germanic elements: “*aþalaz” (noble, nobleman, aristocratic, eminent, glorious, excellent) plus “*rīkijaz” (kingly, royal, noble, mighty, distinguished, powerful, rich). The name means “the noble and mighty ruler.” 1) Æthelric was the 11th-century Englishman. Consecrated a bishop in 1058, he was deposed in 1070 for unknown reasons and then imprisoned by King William I of England. 3) Aethelric was the fourth known king of the Kingdom of Bernicia, which he ruled from 568 to 572.
