It is a Meccan Sura. The Surah is so designated after the word `abasa with which it opens. It is the name of many companions of Prophet Muhammad, including Abbas bin Abdulmutallab, uncle of the Prophet, and an important figure in Islamic history. Abbas derives from the AIN-B-S (grim) root used in many places in the Quran.
