Name Root:
ʾ-s-w > ʾasiya > Āsiyah
Meaning:*
This name derives from the Arabic “Āsiyah,” meaning “strong, sturdy, robust, column, pillar or one who tends to the weak and heals them,” which in turn derives from “ʾ-s-w > ʾasiya” meaning “to be distressed, to be gloom, to be grieved, to be unhappy, consolation, medical treatment.” Asiya bint Muzahim was the Great Royal Wife of Ancient Egypt’s Pharaoh of the Exodus and the adoptive mother of Moses in the Islamic tradition. Muslims believe that Asiya came from a wealthy family and that she was a beautiful and generous woman. Asiyah is also used to refer to continent Asia, although today, the standard way to refer to Asia is the word (Āsyā).
