A) Saint Valentine (Latin: Valentinus) was a widely recognized third century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love. B) Pope Valentine (~800–827) was Pope for two months in 827. Born in Rome in the region of the Via Lata, Valentine was the son of a Roman noble called Leontius. C) Valentinus (~100–160) was the best known and for a time most successful early Christian gnostic theologian. He founded his school in Rome. According to Tertullian, Valentinus was a candidate for bishop of Rome but started his own group when another was chosen.
