DARASA > ʼIDRīS
Meaning:*
This name derives from the Arabic “ʼIdrīs,” which in turn derives from the verb “darasa” meaning “to study, to learn.” Idris is an ancient prophet mentioned in the Qur’an. He is described in the Qur’an as “trustworthy” and “patient.” The Qur’an also says that he was “exalted to a high station,” which has generally been understood in Islamic tradition to mean that he ascended into Heaven without dying. Idris is mentioned twice in the Qur’an, where he is described as a wise man. 1) Idris I (Idris ibn Abdullah) was the first ruler and founder of the Idrisid dynasty and also the founder of the kingdom of Morocco, ruling from 788 to 791. He is credited with founding the dynasty that was instrumental in the early Islamization of Morocco. 2) King Idris I of Libya (born El Sayyid Prince Muhammad Idris bin Muhammad al-Mahdi as-Senussi; 1889–1983), was the first and only king of Libya, reigning from 1951 to 1969, and the Chief of the Senussi Muslim order.
