The family was said to have originated in the reign of Numa Pompilius, the second King of Rome, and its members held the highest offices of the state, from the early decades of the Republic to imperial times. Emily’s name has been used as a vernacular form of the Germanic “Amelia” up to the 19th-century. Used since the Middle Ages, it was popular in the 19th-century and is once again today. Émilie de Vialar (1797–1856) was a French nun who founded the missionary congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. She is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
