pat

SHORT FORM OF:
patrick, patricia
LANGUAGE FAMILY:
indo-european > italic
ORIGIN:
proto-italic  /  latin
NAME ROOT:
*PATēR > PăTĕR > PATRES > PăTRĭCĭUS
NATIVE NAME ROOT:
PATḗR ‎(πατήρ)
MEANING:
This name derives from the Latin “Pătrĭcĭus”, meaning “nobleman, patrician, of noble lineage, ancestry”, from “patres” nominative plural of “Pătĕr”, which in turn derives from the Proto-Italic “*patēr”, meaning “father, head of household”. The term "Patrician" originally referred to a group of elite families in Ancient Rome, including both their natural and adopted members. In the late Roman Empire, the class was broadened to include high council officials, and after the fall of the Western Empire, it remained a high honorary title in the Byzantine Empire. 1) Saint Patrick (Pádraig) was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, along with saints Brigit of Kildare and Columba. He is also venerated in the Anglican Communion, the Old Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church as equal-to-apostles and the Enlightener of Ireland. 2) Saint Patricia of Naples (Patricia of Constantinople) is an Italian virgin martyr and saint. Tradition states that she was noble and may have been related to the Roman Emperor. Some sources say that she was a descendant of Constantine the Great. Wishing to escape a marriage arranged by Constans II, she became a nun and she went to Rome.
