Haviland was founded by a group of Quakers originally from Indiana and named for Laura Haviland, a leader of the Underground Railroad. Laura Smith Haviland (1808–1898) was an American abolitionist, suffragette, and social reformer. She was an essential figure in the history of the Underground Railroad.
