This name derives from the Latin “Iānus > Iānŭārĭus.” January is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and the ancient Roman religion and mythology. The month of January was named in honor of Janus by the Romans. Januarius (Italian: San Gennaro), Bishop of Naples, is a martyr saint of the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.
