francisca

FEMININE FORM:
francisco, francis
LANGUAGE FAMILY:
indo-european > germanic > west germanic > german
ORIGIN:
germanic
NAME ROOT:
FRANKô / *FRANKA > FRANK
MEANING:
This name derives from the Medieval Latin “Francus / Franciscus”, meaning “Franco, belonging to the people of the Franks”. In turn, the name derives from the Germanic “*frankô / *franka”, meaning “javelin, spear”. Ultimately the name is a derivative of the Proto-Germanic “*sahsą”, meaning “knife, dagger”. Franks, in medieval times, were the only people to enjoy the rights of free citizens, the term "frank" taking the meaning of "free man, sincere or truthful”. The term was then associated to the proper name since the ninth century. Originally it refers to a Germanic people, who derived their tribal name from the type of ax they used. The Francisca (or Francesca) is a throwing ax used as a weapon during the Early Middle Ages by the Franks, among whom it was a characteristic national weapon at the time of the Merovingians from about 500 to 750 and is known to have been used during the reign of Charlemagne (768–814). Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Franciscan Order, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis, for men and women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers, followed by the early members of the Order of Friars Minor or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares.
